Solo RPG Play Rankings – October 2026

Solo RPGs for Play Rankings

Solo RPG Play Rankings are a way to share, learn and enjoy what solo RPG players have been playing over the last few months.

For those unaware, I ran the first Solo RPG Play Rankings earlier this year, and published those results back in June – you can find them here.

You can participate in the next Solo RPG Play Rankings survey by clicking the button below.

Without further delay, here are the most recent results!

Top Solo RPGs – Play Ranking

  1. Starforged (34.2%)
  2. Ironsworn (26.3%)
  3. Ker Nethalas (23.7%)
  4. Tied for 4th
    1. Four Against Darkness (17.1%)
    2. Kal-Arath (17.1%)
    3. Thousand Year Old Vampire (17.1%)
    4. D100 Dungeon (17.1%)

These RPGs are all designed specifically for Solo play in mind. The percentage next to the game describes what % of survey respondents voted for this game as one of their top 3 favorite solo RPGs.

Starforged was nominated back in June, and screamed to the top of the list, outpacing Ironsworn by a few votes! Also new to the list was d100 Dungeon – and Thousand Year Old Vampire was new to the top 5!

A few games (Morkim: Lords of Midnight, Zones, The Broken Cask, Caves and Catacombs, What Lies Beneath) received 1 or 0 votes, removing them from the list. Quite a few more games received more than 1 nomination and were added like Alone Against the Zone, Colostle, Delve: A Solo Map Drawing Game, Fallout Wasteland Wanderer, For Small Creatures Such as We, Midnight Muscadines, Ronin and Storytellers.

Top Solo RPG Tools – Play Ranking

  1. Mythic Game Master Emulator (68.2%)
  2. Scarlet Heroes (34.8%)
  3. Riftbreakers 2e (18.2%)
  4. Stars Without Number (18.2%)
  5. Worlds Without Number (15.2%)

There was a bit of discussion as to what the difference between a Solo RPG Tool is versus a Solo RPG game. Some products explicitly do both. I expect (and welcome!) this discussion to continue.

It turns out that besides Mythic GME, the rest of the results on this list are tools designed by Kevin Crawford. If you haven’t checked out any of his designs, the list above is a great place to start.

Two nominated solo RPG tools (That One Time we Solved a Mystery, Cut-Up Solo Series) received only 1 or 0 votes, so they were removed from the list. A few more solo RPG tools received more than one nomination and were added, like Game Master’s Apprentice Deck, Juice Oracle, Loner, Recluse, Storytellers, Tome of Adventure Design, and Triple O.

Top Traditional RPGs being played Solo

  1. Dungeons and Dragons 5e (21.2%)
  2. Traveller (16.7%)
  3. Cairn (16.7%)
  4. Tied for Fourth
    1. Forbidden Lands (13.6%)
    2. Pendragon (13.6%)
    3. Mothership (13.6%)

In a surprise to me, D&D 5e crushed the competition and, according to the survey respondents, is the traditional RPG most played solo. As a reminder, traditional RPGs are defined as RPGs designed with group play in mind (Game Master and 1 or more players controlling a character).

Several traditional RPGs received 1 or 0 votes (Mutant Year Zero, Pathfinder 2e, Castles & Crusades, Nimble, Scum and Villainy, You will die in this place), and have been removed from the voting list. Several other traditional RPGs received more than 1 nomination and have been added including Basic Roleplaying, Brindlewood Bay, Call of Cthulhu, Alien RPG, Daggerheart, Land of Eem, Mork Borg, Mythic Bastionland, Into the Odd, Pirate Borg, Vagabond, and Warhammer Fantasy.
