Weekly Design Updates: 4/13 and 4/20

I’m starting something new – weekly design updates. Every Monday, I’ll be writing a few hundred words on what I accomplished last week, and what I hope to accomplish in the upcoming week. Here are the most recent two weekly design updates.

Weekly Design Update – 4/13/2026

These design updates will be new for me, and I’m doing them for two reasons. First, many designers I admire do something similar. As a fan of their work and games, it’s a great way for me to see what they are working on, and what I can get excited about in the future.

Second, they will help keep me focused. After all, 2026 is the year I’m trying to push Paper Dice Games fully into the realm of “fun part-time work” instead of “fun hobby work.”

Last Week

Last week I completed all the major publishing tasks for Apollo Mine: Join the Race for Space. This includes all final layout editing (though the designer on the game, Rhys Turton, did an excellent job putting this together which didn’t leave much for me), as well as copy editing and proofreading the document.

There were mostly rules clarifications to update, as well as a few typos. Even so, proofreading 33 pages of text is not a small task (it’s not a large one either – just takes focused, non-creative time to do). I always feel drained after this part of publishing.

But it got done! Review copies were sent out, and I started to build game pages for the game. Things were on track for a smooth release.

This Week

This week, Apollo Mine releases! It releases on Tuesday, April 14th.

Time to tell you a secret – I often do a soft launch the evening before the release, to ensure the game page looks good and the marketplaces index the game before release day. Sssssshhhhh.

Once the game releases, I’ll be spending most my time this week communicating to fans of Paper Dice Games, fans of Dwarf Mine, and fans of indie RPGs that the game is out! Rhys Turton did an excellent job with the design, it’s my first game with color art for the cover – I think people are going to have a lot of fun with it!

Finally, I need to get started putting together my Artifacts that Wont’ Ruin your Sci Fi Campaign document. This will be a free release for the annual May Day celebration…and that’s coming up! So late in the week I’ll start putting that together.

Weekly Design Update – 4/20/2026

Last week was a busy week! Here’s what I was up to.

Last Week

Big news – Apollo Mine: Join the Race for Space launched! The launch has been positive so far, and reddit user witch-finder created this ABSOLUTELY AMAZING retro NASA-style mission booklet.

One of my goals this year is to break into physical printing, and wow does that get the wheels churning!

I also continued my design of Artifacts that Won’t Ruin your Sci Fi Campaign, the free release for May Day.

This Week

This week I’ll be finishing up my design of Artifacts that Won’t Ruin your Sci Fi Campaign. This is a free one (or two) page release that will be available on Friday May 1st for the upcoming May Day celebration! Back in March I sent out a poll to fans of Distress Calls for Space RPGs and Grim Space, to see which topic they liked best. This topic won, so I’ll have that ready for everyone soon!

I’ll also begin full brainstorming for the Fantasy Civ Solo expansion that will be released likely around July-August. Initial playtest concepting went well, so now I need to consolidate my ideas and start playtesting them. I’ll also draft a new map and playtest it, as well as likely order cover art. I’m hoping to have an image of my progress soon!
