Just a reminder – Fantasy Civ Solo: Discovery and Doom will become available on Tuesday, June 17th! I have progress updates further down in this article.
In this article, I want to talk in more detail about a big part of the game – MONSTERS!
Monsters in Fantasy Civ Solo
In my previous blog post, I discussed the importance and fun around discovery in Fantasy Civ Solo. Monsters provide the counter-balance (and even more fun) when it comes to exploring.
In Fantasy Civ Solo, after rolling the discovery die, you’ll roll the Monster die. If the result is 4 or more, a monster is discovered on the hex!

There are three parts to every monster entry. The first, is a flavorful description of the monster. Remember, Fantasy Civ Solo is fantasy-theme-agnostic, meaning you can flavor the creatures in the image above as pretty much anything you want. For example – are the small bickering creatures below goblins? Kobolds? Hobgoblins? Orcs? Faeries? Brownies? Gujeans? I made that last one up – but you get the point, you can determine what these creatures are based on the type of world you want to build.

The second part of the monster entry are its stats. Monsters have health, deal damage, and have speed. Once a monster’s health is reduced to 0 or below, it is dead. It deals damage as described, and speed identifies if it attacks first or second in combat, and how far it moves (if at all) during the map turn.
Monsters provide a counter-balance to discovery. They give you small or large challenges that your civilization may or must deal with at some point in the future. They represent the dangers of the wild, and the forces of nature, evil, or a different point of view that push back against your civilization.
What You Can Find
The 20 different monsters on the Monster Table offer small challenges for your civilization. Some you’ll be able to ignore, some you’ll have to prepare for, and some you may want to destroy to better access the area near its hex.

Monsters push back against your civilization’s ability to explore and use the discoveries it finds.

There are also 10 different epic monsters.

Epic monsters represent an even larger challenge to your civilization. While epic monsters are (mostly) weaker than the doom that will eventually come for your civilization, they represent major challenges and obstacles for your civilization to overcome.

They can also lead to something secret within the game.
Fantasy Civ Solo Progress
Fantasy Civ Solo is done! Well – almost. The 1.0 version is complete, and is going through final proofreading this weekend.

Proofreading makes sure I catch most of the obvious mistakes (and I’ve found soooooooooo many already), and hopefully catches a lot of the less obvious mistakes.
Proofreading also gives me an opportunity to take one last look at some of the monster and unit stats for rebalancing, as well as adjust any names, descriptions, or otherwise that fall a bit flat.
I have spent way more time than I expected to get this game out the door, and I can’t wait for Tuesday June 17th!
