The noble who invites the characters to the feast is the widowed and wealthy Lady Maestra…with her is the gorgeous Lady Lissima, and the tall Lord Bellam. These two are married, but share little love for one another. There is also the pretty, yet dangerously petty Lady Colosa, and the jovial and handsome yet jealous Lord Brasso. These two are courting one another, but currently in a deep argument. Finally there is Anza – who is not a noble, but is intimately tied to each of the nobles at the feast.
And so the characters are introduced for the Flirty Feast – one of the thirty planned Road Encounters for Fantasy RPGs! You can download the 1-page Flirty Feast encounter at the link near the bottom of this article.

Why Road Encounters for Fantasy RPGs
Most fantasy role playing games use encounter tables for overland travel that often include a creature, terrain type, and treasure type. The assumption is that the encounter will lead to combat, and that a reward of treasure is promised if the player characters are victorious in combat.
This type of gameplay is fun, but over the years I’ve found it to be quite one dimensional.
So I decided to make a resource with hand-designed, fun, exciting, and unique encounters that (mostly) avoid combat, and utilize skills that are used less frequently in fantasy role playing games.
These encounters will allow players to participate in feasts, act in a play and create poetry, save farmers (or not), and solve magical mysteries. Each encounter will feature a few less used skills that are often ignored in fantasy role playing games. The encounters are flexible enough for dungeon masters to plug into most settings and styles of play, yet directed enough so the dungeon master can avoid excess preparation.
Perhaps most importantly, the resolution of each encounter outlines the rewards (or consequences) of the player’s actions. These resolutions may include the favor of a noble at court, a folk-hero song sung about a player character, information about faerie magic in the region, or a dangerous enemy at the very next inn.
What’s Next
I have a fair amount of work remaining on this book. Here’s the remaining work as I see it, in no particular order:
- Collect and incorporate feedback on Flirty Feast and rest of designed encounters (ongoing)
- Brainstorm and complete the rest of the road encounters (I’m about 25% done, 50% concept complete, and 25% still brainstorming)
- Order cover art
- Index, and put book together
- PDF usability – I want to make sure the book is easy to use
- Proofreading
- Release
- Post-Release Updates – I always update my products after release!
