2023 was a bit of a different year for me. As I noted in my earlier State of Paper Dice Games article, I was burned out at the end of 2022. While I still had release aspirations for PDG in 2023, one of my personal goals was to simply play more games. Which, I am happy to say, I managed.
2023 Highlights
My focus on playing games resulted in a lighter year for releases for Paper Dice Games. Even so, I am happy with what I was able to do, and I am excited to share some of the great things that occurred over the last 12 months.
July – Content Restart (Youtube, Blog)
September – Beyond the Mountain
November – Extra Life
December – Mailing List Restart, Winter Workshop Free Room for Dwarf Mine
The list was a bit shorter than I had anticipated for this year, and there are two reasons for that.
First, I had some great design and playtest sessions, including an ongoing closed gameplay/rules playtest currently for family. I learned a lot about the games I am designing, and how they interact with people who play them.

While I learned a lot, all the designs I playtested weren’t as close as I originally thought to a finished game that worked the way I intended. So I put them down for a while.
Second, I had a ton of fun playing games. I’ve written about this already, so I won’t drill this point any further – but it was a fun year for gaming.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, I’m happy with how the year went, even if it was on the lighter side when it comes to designs and releases. I am no longer feeling burned out like I was at the end of 2022, and I have several designs that are in active states of development and playtesting. I’m not going to share any at the moment, but if you are interested, sign up for my newsletter!
I have one more article planned as I look backward at 2023 – my stakeholders article. Then I’ll be forward looking as I get ready to tackle 2024, with some fun new games for all of you.
As always, thank you for being a fan of games!
